Ever dream of running away and joining the circus? Well, I did. While at first it may seem like a foolish thing to do, it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. It sent me on a path to the wonderful career I have now. But, when I started that wasn’t my intention at all. It was an actual low point in my life that got me where I am today.
I was in New York where I had just broken up with my girlfriend. Since it was her apartment, she asked me to leave and take all of my stuff with me. I through most of it in a self storage unit, and wondered what I was going to do with my life. Now the way it happened for me, is not something I would recommend for someone looking to rebuild their life. I got really drunk, and stumbled upon a traveling carnival set up in a vacant lot on the outskirts of town.
I just wandered around in a daze looking at all the lights, and listening to all the sounds. I was so hungry in my drunken stupor, that I ate my weight in carnival food. At the time it was the best food in the world. Luckily, all of that food and several hours of fresh air sobered me up. I ended up sitting on a log after the carnival closed down, and watch the bright lights turned off one by one. A couple of the workers asked me if I was okay. I must’ve looked really pathetic, because they invited me to hang out with them by their trailers.
He told me about their life on the road, and all of the cities and towns that they visit. They lived and ate for free, and were able to save all of their money. Knowing that I had nowhere to go, I asked if I could join them. They introduced me to the manager who told me to see him in the morning. The next morning he offered me a job helping to put up booths for the show. Having no other offers, I said yes. I spent the next two years traveling with a small show from state to state. I had a blast and met some great people along the way. After a while though, I wanted to stay somewhere stable, but still do the work I was doing.
So I sought out in amusement park where I could work year-round. My first stop was Mariners Landing in Wildwood New Jersey. I ran rides there for a season, but then was promoted to supervisor. From there I led an entire crew from season to season providing the best entertainment tourists could find. After I became manager, I stayed there for three more seasons and decided I had gone as far as I could there. I then sought out a new adventure.
That brings us to the present day. I am now a full-time manager at Disney World. I capitalized on my experience from New Jersey, and leveraged that into an interview at the world’s greatest amusement park. I was so excited when they made me an offer, that I left most of my belongings behind to start new in Florida. My income is higher than it has ever been in my entire life, and I have a blast every day.
So who thought that my drunken escapades at a traveling carnival could lead to such a rewarding career in the amusement field. I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. I meet new people every year, and get to entertain visitors from all over the world. It’s the best life I could have imagined.
